How Does the Basis between Perpetual Futures and Spot Price Relate to the Funding Rate?

The basis is the difference between the perpetual futures price and the spot price. The funding rate is directly calculated from this basis.

A positive basis (futures > spot) leads to a positive funding rate, and a negative basis (futures < spot) leads to a negative funding rate. The funding mechanism aims to drive the basis toward zero.
