How Does the Concept of “Convenience Yield” Relate to Backwardation in Commodities?

Convenience yield is the non-monetary benefit of holding the physical commodity (e.g. ability to profit from a sudden shortage). A high convenience yield can drive the spot price above the futures price, creating backwardation.

The futures price is then equal to the spot price plus the cost of carry minus the convenience yield.
