How Does the Shift to Proof-of-Stake Consensus Mechanisms Impact MEV Extraction?

The shift to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) changes who extracts MEV, but does not eliminate it. In Proof-of-Work, miners controlled transaction ordering and captured MEV.

In PoS, this power shifts to validators. Systems like MEV-Boost have emerged in PoS to create a more structured market for MEV, separating the validator's role from the specialist "builder" role.

This can lead to more efficient MEV extraction and distribution, but also introduces new centralization vectors around a few dominant builders and relays.
