How Does the ‘Time Value’ of an Option Decay as Expiration Approaches?

The time value, or extrinsic value, is the portion of the option's premium that is attributed to the possibility of the option becoming profitable before expiration. This value decays non-linearly, accelerating rapidly in the last 30-45 days before expiration.

This decay is known as 'Theta' risk.
