How Is “Maintenance Margin” Different from Initial Margin?

Maintenance margin is the minimum level to which a trader's margin account balance must be maintained after a position is opened. Initial margin is the amount required to open the position.

If losses cause the account balance to drop below the maintenance margin level, the trader receives a margin call and must deposit funds to bring the balance back up to the initial margin level.
