Is Staking Reward Income Treated as Ordinary Income or Capital Gain?

Staking rewards are generally treated as ordinary income at the fair market value of the crypto when it is received and the taxpayer gains dominion and control over it. This is similar to how mining income is taxed.

When the staked crypto is later sold, any further appreciation is taxed as a capital gain.
