What Does It Mean for a Futures Contract to Be “Cash-Settled”?

Cash-settlement means that upon expiration, instead of the physical delivery of the underlying asset (like Bitcoin or oil), the difference between the contract price and the final settlement price is paid in cash. This is common for contracts where physical delivery is impractical or undesirable, such as stock indices or cryptocurrency futures.

The underlying asset never changes hands.
