What Does ‘Theta Decay’ Represent for an Option Holder?

Theta decay, or time decay, is the measure of the rate at which an option's price decreases as the time to expiration shortens, all other factors remaining constant. Since options have a finite life, their Time Value erodes as the expiration date approaches.

Theta is typically a negative number, reflecting a loss in value for the option holder over time.
