What Happens to Open Positions at the Time of Expiration?

At the time of expiration, all open positions in a traditional futures contract are automatically settled. If the contract is cash-settled, the profit or loss is calculated based on the final settlement price and credited or debited to the trader's account.

If it is physically settled, the obligation to deliver or receive the underlying asset is triggered.
