What Happens to the Time Value as the Option Approaches Expiration?

As an option approaches expiration, its time value erodes and eventually drops to zero at expiration. This process is known as time decay (Theta).

The closer the expiration, the less time there is for the underlying price to move favorably, thus the less value the 'time' component holds.
