What Is a “Calendar Spread” in Futures Trading?

A calendar spread is a trading strategy that involves simultaneously buying one futures contract and selling another futures contract on the same underlying asset but with different expiration dates. Traders use this to profit from the expected change in the price difference (the basis) between the two contracts, often related to contango or backwardation.
