What Is a Perpetual Futures Contract and Why Is It Cash-Settled?

A perpetual futures contract is a derivative that, unlike traditional futures, has no expiration date. Traders can hold the position indefinitely.

It is cash-settled because there is no defined end date for physical delivery to occur. Instead, a 'funding rate' mechanism is used to periodically adjust the price and keep it anchored to the underlying spot price.
