What Is a ‘Swaption’ as a Form of Financial Derivative?

A swaption is an option that gives the holder the right, but not the obligation, to enter into an interest rate swap or another type of swap agreement at a predetermined future date. It is essentially an option on a swap.

Swaptions are commonly used by companies to manage or hedge against interest rate risk by locking in the terms of a future swap.
