What Is ‘Burning’ in the Context of Cryptocurrency?

Burning is the process of permanently removing a cryptocurrency from circulation, usually by sending it to an unspendable address, often called a 'eater address' or 'null address'. This effectively reduces the total supply of the asset.

It is often used to implement deflationary tokenomics or as part of a fee mechanism like EIP-1559.
