What Is ‘Default Waterfall’ in the Context of a Clearing House?

The default waterfall is the sequence of financial resources the clearing house uses to cover losses resulting from a member's default. It typically starts with the defaulting member's margin and capital, then the clearing house's own capital, followed by the mutualized default fund contributed by all members, and finally, potentially, a call on additional member contributions.
