What Is “Flare Gas” Mining and How Does It Relate to Environmental Impact?

Flare gas mining is the practice of using natural gas that would otherwise be burned off (flared) at oil extraction sites to power cryptocurrency mining operations. Proponents argue this is environmentally positive because it converts methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into CO2, which is less harmful, while also putting the energy to use.

It reduces waste and can be more environmentally friendly than flaring. However, critics argue that it still involves burning fossil fuels and may create an economic incentive to continue oil extraction.
