What Is “Liquidation” in Perpetual Futures or Options on Crypto Exchanges?

Liquidation is the forced closing of a leveraged position by the exchange's risk engine. It occurs when a trader's margin balance falls below the maintenance margin level.

The exchange liquidates the position to prevent the account balance from becoming negative, thereby protecting the exchange and other traders from potential losses.
