What Is “Slashing” in a Proof-of-Stake System?

Slashing is a punitive mechanism in PoS where validators who engage in malicious or negligent behavior have a portion of their staked cryptocurrency confiscated (slashed) by the protocol. Malicious behavior includes double-signing blocks or proposing conflicting blocks.

This economic penalty enforces honesty and security by creating a financial risk for misbehavior.
