What Is the Concept of Staking in Proof-of-Stake (PoS) Systems?

Staking is the act of locking up cryptocurrency to support the security and operations of a Proof-of-Stake blockchain network. In return for securing the network and validating transactions, stakers are rewarded with newly minted coins or transaction fees.

This mechanism replaces the energy-intensive mining of Proof-of-Work systems. Staking is essential for network consensus.
