Weak subjectivity means that a new node joining the PoS network cannot determine the correct chain solely by checking the longest chain rule from the genesis block. Instead, it must rely on a recent, trusted checkpoint.

This is necessary to defend against long-range attacks, as the new node only needs to trust the checkpoint, not the entire history.
