What Is the Difference between a European and American Style Option?

The primary difference lies in the exercise date. A European style option can only be exercised on its expiration date.

An American style option can be exercised at any time between the purchase date and the expiration date. American options are generally more valuable because of the flexibility in exercise, but both derive their value from the underlying asset.
