What Is the Difference between a Principal and an Agency OTC Trade?

In a principal trade, the OTC desk acts as the direct counterparty, buying or selling from its own inventory, thereby taking on the market risk. In an agency trade, the desk acts as an intermediary, finding another counterparty for the client and charging a commission, without taking on the risk itself.

Most large crypto OTC desks operate on a principal basis.
