What Is the Difference between American-Style and European-Style Options Exercise?

American-style options give the holder the right to exercise the option at any time up to and including the expiration date. European-style options can only be exercised on the expiration date itself.

American options typically have a higher premium because the flexibility of early exercise is valuable. The underlying asset of the option does not determine the style; the contract terms do.
