What Is the Purpose of “Hedging” with Futures Contracts?

Hedging is a risk management strategy used to offset potential losses from adverse price movements in an underlying asset. By taking an opposite position in a futures contract (e.g. selling a futures contract if you own the asset), a hedger locks in a price, protecting themselves from market downturns.

This transfers price risk to speculators.
