What Is the Risk of “Slashing” in a Proof-of-Stake Protocol?

Slashing is a punitive mechanism in PoS protocols designed to maintain network integrity and penalize validators who act maliciously or fail to perform their duties correctly. If a validator double-signs a block or goes offline for too long, a portion of their staked cryptocurrency is automatically taken away (slashed) by the protocol's smart contract.
