What Is the Role of a Swap Execution Facility (SEF)?

A SEF is a trading system or platform where standardized swaps are traded in a transparent, organized manner, similar to an exchange. Post-Dodd-Frank, SEFs were created to bring more transparency and competition to the previously opaque OTC swap market, facilitating the move towards mandated central clearing.

They act as regulated marketplaces for swaps.
