What Is the Tax Implication of Exercising a Long Option Contract?

Exercising a long call option adds the premium paid to the cost basis of the acquired stock. Exercising a long put option reduces the proceeds from the sale of the stock by the premium paid.

In both cases, the act of exercise itself is not a taxable event, but the subsequent sale of the underlying asset is where the gain or loss is realized.
