Why Are Most Interest Rate and Stock Index Futures Cash-Settled?

Interest rate and stock index futures are predominantly cash-settled because physical delivery of the underlying asset is impractical or impossible. You cannot physically deliver an interest rate or a stock index.

Furthermore, the primary participants in these markets are financial institutions seeking to hedge or speculate on the price movement, not to take or make delivery of the constituent components. Cash settlement is the most efficient method.
