Why Is High Gamma Detrimental to a Static Delta Hedge?

A static Delta hedge involves setting the hedge ratio once and not adjusting it. High Gamma means the option's Delta changes rapidly with small movements in the underlying price.

This rapid change quickly invalidates the initial static hedge, exposing the position to significant directional risk. The portfolio immediately becomes either long or short Delta, leading to losses if the underlying continues to move.
